Ex–Neil Peart 1965 Maserati Mistral 3500 Spyder offered at online auction by Repo Vehicle Holdings. Bank-sourced car with a clear title, VIN history report, no buyer fees and a 30-day return window. Open bidding with the full bid history visible.
This 1965 Maserati Mistral is one of 125 Spyders manufactured over five years of production and is among 27 examples built with power from a 3.5-liter DOHC inline-six. Chassis 049 left the factory on March 4, 1965, for delivery to the US via Hoffman Motor Cars in New York. It was purchased circa 2015 by Rush drummer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Neil Peart, who subsequently commissioned a refurbishment that included a color change to silver in accordance with the “Silver Surfer” theme of his car collection. Additional work as part of the project included a re-trim of the interior in red leather and an overhaul of the Lucas mechanical fuel injection system. Following Peart’s 2020 passing, the car was sold in 2021 and underwent further refurbishment work by Automotive Restorations in Stratford, Connecticut, that involved body repairs, another repaint, and installation of a replacement black convertible top. Powered by a replacement 3.5-liter inline-six, the car also features a ZF five-speed manual transmission, a limited-slip differential, servo-assisted four-wheel disc brakes, and 16” Borrani wire wheels.
The convertible variant of the Mistral was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1964 and shared the 2,400mm-wheelbase box-section frame of the Mistral coupe that had debuted in late 1963. The Spyder shared much of the coupe’s Frua-penned styling, with a raked trunk lid in place of the fixed-roof variant’s hatchback panel. The open-roofed version’s construction incorporated a steel body with aluminum utilized for the doors, hood, and trunk lid.
Originally finished in Cordoba, this example was repainted in its current shade of silver after the car’s purchase by Neil Peart. Further refurbishment work performed by Automotive Restorations between 2021 and 2023 included welding repairs to the lower rear valance, passenger-side door, driver-side rocker panel and fender, hood, wheel wells, and underside as well as straightening and alignment of the body panels before a repaint in silver. A replacement black convertible top was fabricated during the 2021-2023 project.
The Borrani wire wheels are secured by three-eared knock-offs, while stopping is handled by Girling disc brakes with assistance from twin servos. The wheels were rebuilt and mounted with 185VR16 Pirelli Cinturato tires in the course of the 2015-2017 refurbishment. Work between 2021 and 2023 included rebuilding the rear calipers and replacing the wheel bearings.
